A 1 year
explanation

If an adult driver is convicted of DUI with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) less than 0.10%, he or she will face the following penalties for a first offense: A fine of $100 – $300, a highway safety assessment of $500, an additional $86 fee, and license suspension for 30 – 180 days. In addition, the person will be sentenced to jail for up to one year, required to perform 10 – 60 hours of community service, or both. (However, at its discretion, the court may require the driver to complete a special course on driving under the influence rather than go to jail.) Finally, the court may require the person to install an ignition interlock device (IID) on each motor vehicle that he or she operates. The IID will monitor the driver's blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and prevent the vehicle from starting if the person's BAC exceeds a preset limit. [E. Penalties; Chapter X. Drinking and Driving; Rhode Island Driver's Manual], [R. I. G. L. 31-27-2]
