A Minnesota driver’s license (DL) is a card that gives you permission to drive a motor vehicle. Your full name, date of birth, mailing address, signature, photo, and physical description are available on the DL card. You have to bring the card anytime you drive a motor vehicle.
Before you can get a class C license in Minnesota, you are required to pass relevant knowledge and driving tests to show your knowledge about the rules of the road and indicate your driving skills. The DMV permit test is a set of multiple-choice questions and is administered by the state’s official Minnesota DMV only. The Minnesota DMV test consists of 40 questions based on information from the official Minnesota Driver’s Manual. To pass, you must have 32 correct answers (80 percent ).
Depending on how much preparation you do, the test might be difficult or very easy. As long as you study hard, you should have no difficulty passing your test. You will pass, receive your permit, and then learn to drive in order to pass your road test.
The exam will be multiple-choice and will consist of 40 questions, with at least 32 correct answers required to pass.
In Minnesota, the written driver’s license test usually takes between 25 and 45 minutes.
Minnesota residents can request to take the driver’s exam online by visiting drive.mn.gov and clicking on “Take a Class D Knowledge Test.” At the moment, the online option is only accessible for the class D knowledge test, not for commercial or motorcycle licenses. Road tests must still be taken in person.
If you pass the exam, you should fill out the pre-application online at drive.mn.gov before going to an office to get your driver’s license. If you fail the test, follow the DPS-DVS instructions and restart the process to retake it.
Before taking a skills (road) test, anybody 18 or younger must have had an instruction permit for at least six months. After passing the skills (road) exam, you can apply for your provisional license. To be eligible for a provisional license, you must: You must be at least 16 years old.
On each permit, you may take the driver’s test a maximum of three times. If you are over the age of 18 and fail your driver’s exam, you must wait at least one (1) day before retaking it.
A user can only take one test per day and can only complete two online test attempts. If they fail two exams, they must make an appointment for the third test at an open exam station and pay a $10 fee.

Unless your license has been expired for more than a year, you do not need to take a skills (road) test. Even if you have a valid driver’s license from your former home country, if you moved to Minnesota from a nation other than the United States or Canada, you must pass a knowledge, skills, and vision test.
Unless you fail either the written exam for your permit or the driving test for your provisional license more than twice, there is no price to take either test. The third and subsequent attempts to pass your exam will involve a charge of $10 for the written test and $20 for the driving test.
