An Iowa driver’s license (DL) is a card that gives you permission to drive a motor vehicle. Your full name, date of birth, mailing address, signature, photo, and physical description are available on the DL card. You have to bring the card anytime you drive a motor vehicle.
Before you can get a class C license in Iowa, you are required to pass relevant knowledge and driving tests to show your knowledge about the rules of the road and indicate your driving skills. The DMV permit test is a set of multiple-choice questions and is administered by the state’s official Iowa DMV only. The Iowa DMV knowledge test consists of 35 questions, with at least 28 correct answers required to pass (80 percent). Prepare for the official Iowa driver’s license test by taking this practice test.
If you fail the test within ninety days, you may retake it twice more, however, you must generally wait one day between attempts and may be charged a reexamination fee each time.
If a testing aid is used during the written exam, the exam will be marked as a fail. The DMV may refuse to issue a driver’s license or ID card, remove the person’s driving privileges for one year, and/or cancel an application for a higher-class license as punishment for cheating.
After passing the test, you have to pay $8.00 for a 2 Year License or $20.00 for 5 Year License, and $6 for an instruction permit that only lasts 4 Years.
To get your driver’s license, you must pass a vision screening exam, a written test, and a driving test. You’ll be allowed to practice with another licensed driver, and then when you’re ready, you may go to the Iowa DMV office and take the road test.
When you renew your Iowa driver’s license, you will be charged $32, or $4 every year that your license is valid. Those above the age of 78 will be granted a license that is only valid for two years and has an $8 renewal fee.
You can renew your driver’s license up to 180 days before it expires. You may renew your driver’s license up to one year before the expiration date if you can demonstrate a good cause.
Proof of full name, date of birth, and Social Security number is required. Proof of citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or an employment authorization document (EAD) or I-94 document is required. Please provide proof of Iowa residency (your license showing your Iowa address will meet this requirement) Pass the vision screening.
The Iowa Department of Transportation will continue to require appointments for license renewals. That means that even once COVID-19 is no longer an issue, Iowans must schedule appointments to do in-person business at any of the Iowa DOT’s driver’s license service centers.
