The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles handles licensing and registration needs of Maine residents. The Department of the Secretary of State oversees this department. The state has a variety of offices.
You can go to the main office of BMV or one of the many offices scattered throughout the state. There are Motor Vehicle Branch Offices throughout the state. Except on holidays, these locations are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
You can also go to one of the Motor Vehicle Mobile Unit locations. Each location has different operating hours. Some are open for the majority of the day, while others are just open for a few hours in the afternoon. Check with your local mobile unit before your visit.
There are AAA Northern New England locations throughout the state. You can renew your ID card, Class C license, or non-CDL license or get a duplicate ID or license when you go to one of these offices.
The majority of the tasks don't require you to visit an office in person. You can renew your registration, purchase vanity plates, renew your driver's license, and search through driving records using the online service. If you don't feel like dealing with the hassle of visiting the BMV, this is a good alternative. You can log in whenever you want to and complete the task because the online service is available all day and all night. You can take care of business without missing work.
You can contact the Bureau of Motor Vehicles if you have any questions. Contact a representative via phone or send correspondence to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles through the mail in the care of the Secretary of State.
