Standard driver's licenses, commercial driver's licenses, identification cards, vehicle registration, and titling are all handled by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Use the online services available to you or schedule an appointment to go to the DMV.
Use the online services provided by the California DMV to avoid the lines. These services include:
If you haven't recently requested a change of address, you can only use the online services for renewal. If so, you should mail in your renewal notice or visit the DMV in person, putting the new address on the back of the form. Otherwise you should anticipate delays with your renewal.
Nobody enjoys waiting at the DMV. Thanks to the California DMV's appointment system, you won't have to worry about that.
You can make an appointment to register a title, apply for an ID card or an original driver’s license, or take a driver’s test.
Apply online if you are making an appointment for no more than three services. Call the DMV to schedule more than three tasks for your DMV visit. Your request will be handled over the phone.
The DMV can be reached easily. Call 800-777-0133 to get in touch with the DMV.
Call 800-368-4327 if you have a hearing impairment.
The following options are available when you call the DMV:
Call the DMV from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific time on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday or from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesdays if you want to talk with a representative. If not, you must make use of the automated system.
