CDL Class

The federal government divides CDLs into three categories, each of which is associated with a specific type of vehicle:

Class B (Heavy straight vehicles): any single vehicle weighing at least 26,001 pounds, or any similar vehicle towing other than a vehicle with a GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of less than 10.000 pounds.

Any single or combination vehicles that are not included in class A or class B are classified as class C (small vehicles).

How to get a CDL?

These are CDL requirements:

• You must be at least 18 years of age to participate.
• Have a valid driver’s license (or learner permit) in the state where you intend to apply.
• Pass the written knowledge test for the CDL.
• Get your physical and finish your medical exam.

CDL written knowledge test

School bus endorsement

A school bus endorsement is used to transport students to school or authorized school activities. If the school bus doesn’t transport students, school bus endorsement isn’t required. Note that, before you apply for school bus endorsement, you must obtain passenger endorsement.

Passenger endorsement

Passenger endorsement holders are allowed to carry 16 or more people, including the driver. The test has 20 multiple-choice questions on the vehicle inspection, loading and trip start, after-trip vehicle inspection, prohibited activities, and use of brake-door interlocks.
