In New York State, if a school bus has stopped with its red lights flashing, vehicles traveling in either direction must stop at least 20 feet from the bus. They must remain stopped until the bus resumes its motion or they are waved on by the bus driver. Note: The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Driver's Manual states incorrectly that they must remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing or they are waved on by the bus driver.
