In South Carolina, anyone operating a motor vehicle or motorcycle on public roads must have a driver license or learner's permit. You must be 15 years old or older to apply for a learner's permit. You'll need to present a birth certificate, proof of residency, a social security card or equivalent, and you'll need to pass the eyesight and knowledge tests. The South Carolina written knowledge test is based on the contents of the South Carolina Driver's Manual and contains questions on road signs, road rules, and safe driving practices. The SC DMV written test has 30 questions, and you must answer 24 of them correctly to pass (80% or higher). Practice with our South Carolina permit practice test to prepare for the official South Carolina driver's license test.
